Hi, Everyone! We had a wonderful time in Italy and made it home safe and sound. It was really difficult returning to the "real world" after such an amazing trip! We have posted pictures in two places. Click on the links below to view them!

3 More Days in Tuscany

I am not a real sci-fi fan, but all of those movies about computers coming to life and taking over the world are starting to become more believable. We have been driving around Tuscany the last 3 days, following our GPS (Francesca). Unfortunately, she has started giving us the wrong directions on purpose. She has even began using different tones in her voice, and I think she laughed at me one day and called me a retard the next. She will tell me to "take the first right at the round about", and then immediately follow with "when possible make a legal U-turn". In the last three days I have made about 40 illegal u-turns, went down several one way streets in the wrong direction, and caused several Italian drivers to laugh or honk the horn. When you do something really stupid over here they just laugh at you or clap. In the states all of these would have resulted in 20 middle fingers, 15 F-Us, and probably a few road side brawls.

Even with her horrible directions we have been able to visit Pisa, Volterra, Montalchino, the BANFI winery, Pienza, Asciano and the drive back to Siena, the entire Chianti region, San Gimignano, and of course Siena. We have eaten two dinners at our Agriturismo which are hands down two of the best dinners I have ever had. We made friends with a couple from California, Bill and Karen, who also stayed at our Agriturismo.

This morning we are getting ready to drive into Florence to drop of the car and that freaking GPS and then we will take the train from Florence to Venice. We are having a great time and cannot (still cannot find that stinkin apostrophe) wait to show off our pictures.

Griswolds in Rome and Tuscany

I did not think the typical Griswold occurences would follow us to Italy...I was wrong. The flight over was long, but they had several movies from which to choose. I originally planned on reading my Italian language book and being fluent in Italian by the time we arrived. I chose to sleep and watch three movies instead. I quickly learned that we would have benefitted greatly by me at least learning a few Italian phrases. However, if you gesture and point Italians will usually try to help you out.

The first day in Rome we visited the Vatican which included the Sistine Chapel, the Museum, and St. Peters Cathedral. All were amazing. I got in trouble a couple of times for taking pictures in forbidden places, but I would just play dumb (not much of a stretch) and they would let us be. I took a ton of pictures and ran out of batteries. When we got back to the hotel I plugged in the battery charger, but decided not to use the step down kit...in short I need to buy my mother a new batter charger. The flames and smoke that shot out of the wall socket did not damage anything else so I guess we were lucky.

Sunday morning we met our tour guide Ron who took us all over Rome. This was the best 85 Euro we could have spent. We walked the entire city, avoided lines, and he was able to explain everything we were seeing. We saw Palentine Hill, the Forum, the Colloseum, the Pantheon, several Cathedrals, Government buildings... We got back to the hotel at about 6 and then AJ and I walked across the Tiber to grab some wine, cheese, and walk back to the Colloseum and see it lit.

At 3am I woke up to a rumbling sound and then felt the entire building shaking. I immediately knew it was an earthquake, but Andrea (who takes about 10 minutes to get her bearings we she is sleeping) tried to tell me it was somone walking heavy. This was my first earthquake. It felt like the entire building was sitting on a water bed and then someone jumped on one side. It last a grand total of about 5 seconds. We thought that it must be a common occurrence because no one was talking about it in the morning. We did not hear anything about it until Cathy and Kelly called us in the afternoon to see if we survived. That call was followed by our families wondering the same thing.

On Monday we arrived in Florence, rented a car (Ford Focus) and drove to the Agriturismo in Siena. Siena is beautiful and we have thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and scenery. We had dinner at the farm last night along with way too much wine.

This morning I got up at 5:30 and drove around trying to find the Arbia River. I did not find it, but it is probably for the best. I have my fishing license, but I have not paid for it yet. We have not decided what we are doing today, but we are just getting ready to eat breakfast and then we will head out again. In short, this has been our most amazing vacation yet. I cannot wait until we can show you pictures or at least post a few. After 3 days I have taken over 1000 pictures.

On a side note, if you realize there apostrophes in this post it is because I cannot find them on this darn Italian keyboard.

Our New Floors

January has been a very busy month! Nick and I decided to redo the flooring in our bathrooms, living room, dining room and entry. We chose a pull and stick laminate tile for the bathrooms (quick, cheap, and easy) and hardwood flooring (actually strand bamboo!) for the living, dining, and entry. After hours of work everything is finally complete! Here are some "after" pictures of the wood floor! I'll post some pictures of the bathroom floors soon.

Christmas and The New Year

It's been awhile since my last post, so I'll give a quick update of our December. On December 13th we had our annual Christmas party. Festive attire is always a must! We had a nice turnout of around 40 people. The new addition of karaoke was enjoyed by all-participants and audience members! Congratulations to our festive attire contest winners: Carlos as Mexican Santa and Cathy as a Candy Cane!

After our party we had a week left of school. The kids were in full holiday mode, so Nick and I were exhausted this week. It was Nick's first time experiencing Christmas time in an elementary school! We spent the week cleaning up from the party and packing for Michigan. We left for MI right after school on the 19th and drove straight through the night arriving at my parent's house around 5:00 a.m.
We had a great Christmas with family and friends. Ty and Cole really got into Christmas this year, so we had a great time watching them open their presents (and some of ours too!). As always time goes way too fast, and before we knew it we were headed home to Georgia. I was bummed that I didn't get to see as many friends as I would have liked. It is such a busy time of year!

On the 30th we headed up to our rental house in Tennessee. This was not the same house as our Thanksgiving retreat. Nick wanted to try a different river. Nick's brother Brett and his girlfriend Crystal drove down from Michigan and friends Kelly and Cathy joined us from Georgia This huge house was right on the river, so Nick enjoyed fishing in the backyard. He didn't catch as many as he would have liked, but had fun anyway! We spent the rest of the time hiking (beautiful!), relaxing, playing games, and we even had some time to visit a winery for some wine tasting! We had an awesome New Year's Eve dinner of steak and crab legs. Yummy! We visited Bristol Caverns and finally headed home on January 2nd.

Now we're back to school after a wonderful break! We hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas with your family. Best wishes for 2009!!

Love,

Nick & AJ

Thanksgiving in Bristol, TN

Andrea and I decided to rent a cabin in the mountains for Thanksgiving. After she gave me the job of finding the cabin, I set out to find a place with everything Andrea wanted (fireplace, complete kitchen, surrounded by nature) and then I added my own qualification...close to a trout stream. We settled on Anderson's Riverside Cabin next to the South Holston River in Bristol, TN. The cabin was perfect. Andrea slept in everyday and woke up to read by the fire while deer and turkey roamed around outside. I woke up by 4:30 everymorning to hit the river in search of trophy brown trout. I ended up landing 4 fish over 20 inches, including a 25 inch brown and a 29 inch brown. I only fished until 9:00am each morning and then AJ and I spent the rest of the day together.

On Wednesday we went into Bristol to see the Bristol Speedway in Lights. We drove through all of the lights and ended up on the race track where I was able to take the banked curve in the old Dodge. On Thanksgiving we hiked several miles through the mountians to the river and then made it back to the cabin to make a complete Thanksgiving dinner. Everything turned out perfectly and we topped off the night with some wine and some intense games of Battleship (which we purchased at the local Walmart). On Friday we went to the Bristol Caverns for a cave tour. We are already talking about planning our next trip up there.

Veteran's Day

In honor of Veteran's Day, I thought I would post a really neat picture that our friend Cathy took at the Vietnam Wall Memorial when we were in Washington D.C. a few weeks ago. Neat, isn't it?

Cassidy Finishes 2nd!!

Gus on Left

Gus Cassidy that is! Gus participated in the Callaway Garden's Steeplechase JRT races on Saturday. He placed second in the stakes race. As some of you may remember he also placed second at his last JRT sanctioned event (Atlanta Steeplechase). We were pleased with his performance, but his competitive father (Nick) says the training must continue. Gus's next race will be in April at the Atlanta Steeplechase. We will be hoping for a first place ribbon! :)

Nick's D.C. Marathon

We awoke early this morning ready to cheer Nick on as he ran the Marine Corps. Marathon. The boys were up, dressed, ready, and out the door by 6:15. I met Kelly and Cathy for breakfast and then we headed to mile one. We were able to see him several times throughout the race...mile 1, 10, 16, and the finish (mile 26.2). He looked strong at each location (a little less strong at the finish:) ) and we enjoyed cheering him on as he ran through our nation's capitol. It was neat watching them run past locations such as the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Arlington National Cemetery.

He finished with a time of 3 hours and 33 minutes. Not his best time ever, but we're extremely proud!! Kelly, Cathy, and I are now back at the hotel making this post. We are then going to meet up with Nick after he has soaked in a tub of ice. He's requested a beer!! :) If he's up to it we are going to go and do some sightseeing today.

Check out our pictures. We'll update again soon!

Lake Blue Ridge

The Aliner was getting the camping itch, so the weekend of October 4th we took a trip to Lake Blue Ridge with our friends Cathy and Kelly. After a quick stop at Mercier's Apple Orchard (for some fried apple pies, cider, and doughnuts) we arrived at the campground to set up camp. Much to our surprise, we were able to secure a lakefront spot! An afternoon of canoeing, kayaking, and fishing was just what we needed to relax us after a long first few months of school! The weather was beautiful (my bathing suit was able to make one last appearance before being stored for the winter) and the mountain views were amazing!

It was Skip's first camping trip and we think he had fun. Gus enjoyed a swim and both dogs loved sitting around the campfire and scarfing down camping treats (hotdogs, doughnuts, graham crackers, and chips).

Fall is so beautiful here in Georgia! We had such a wonderful weekend! Next up: Nick's Washington D.C. Marathon the weekend of October 25th. Check back for updates!
Love,
Nick & AJ

Trip to MI

We enjoyed a long weekend trip in Michigan. Nick spent some time salmon fishing while I got in some quality "nephew" time. Nick's fishing report and pictures can be found on the Millington News Website. We also enjoyed spending time with friends and family while enjoying the beautiful fall weather. See the pictures below. Enjoy!

We Made it Home

We arrived home last night at 9:00 pm. What a trip!!! Even though we were not ready for the trip to be over, it was nice to pull in the driveway. Our house sitters had the place sparkling, and Gus was spoiled so much when we were gone that I think he is actually depressed that Jim and Marsha are gone. Keep checking back over the next couple days as we will put up some more pictures and even some product endorsements. Here is our trip by the numbers:

.5- miles traveled before our first disaggreement over directions (still in our subdivision)

5009- total miles traveled on the trip

10- things ruined or lost on the trip including bike rack, trailer window (forgot to put it down), trailer air conditioner (forgot to take the cover off), shifter on AJ's new bike (I accidentally broke it off), AJ's lucky cowgirl hat (lost it at Slough Creek), AJ's sunglasses (broken), spare tire rack, trailer bumper, cam shaft sensor, blown fuse (4 times)

60+- miles hiked on the trip (wait until you here about our Slough Creek hike and how I had to hike the mountain twice!!!!)

5- different campgrounds

4-different Wal-marts where we slept for a few hours during our travels (by the way there are some freaks that hang out in Wal-Mart parking lots in the middle of the night)

6- fishing licenses purchased (4 for Nick and 2 for Andrea)

0- hours of TV watched during the trip

500+- number of pictures taken. You could take 5 million pictures and it still wouldn't do the American West justice. You have to see it for yourself.

5- meals consisting of SPAM, Ramen noodles, or Corned Beef Hash. One mega-meal featured all three. That'll put hair on your chest!!!

Black Hills and Badlands

Hi! We've been out of cell/internet range for the past few days and are finally able to make a post. On Wednesday, the 16th, we hiked into Slough Creek in Yellowstone...I will let Nick update you on that when he has a free moment. My only words for that hike were flies and mosquitoes...enough said!

We left Yellowstone at about 3:00 p.m. to start our drive for the Black Hills. The drive took us through the Bear Tooth Mountains and the Big Horn Mountains. It was steep, curvy, tough driving for Nick, but it was amazingly beautiful! Nick drove until he couldn't stand it and we slept for a few hours in the Gillette, WY Wal-Mart parking lot. We were up and about at 7:00 and on the road.

First stop was the United States' first national monument, Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Devil's Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. You can read more about this amazing formation by clicking on this link. As we drove through the park we saw tons of prairie dogs. It was fun watching them scamper around and listen to their "barks." We also saw two badgers.

Next stop was Jewel Cave. I had been looking forward to this stop since our trip began. We chose to do the lantern tour which involved a half mile, 105-minute tour of Jewel Cave's calcite-coated passageways while carrying old-style oil lanterns. The tour didn't disappoint and we were once again amazed! Read more about Jewel Cave.

Our busy day continued as we checked into our campground, Mount Rushmore KOA, which is located 5 miles from the Presidential Monument. As we pulled into to the resort, I told Nick I felt like I was at the Ritz Carlton of RV parks! The park boasted 500 sites and 55 Kamping Kabins, two pools and spas, a water slide, American Indian dancers, miniature golf, hayrides, a restaurant, and even car rentals! After setting up camp and taking a nice shower we grabbed a bite to eat at the resort’s restaurant and headed to Mount Rushmore. The monument was amazing, but the sun was setting in all the wrong places, which made picture taking difficult. We hiked the mile-or-so Presidential Trail admiring the artistic masterpiece and decided to come back in the morning for better photos. After a campfire and a few s’mores we were exhausted and ready for bed!

Heavy rain woke us up this morning, and it was challenging to pack up a wet camper. We were on the road by 7:30 once again headed for Mount Rushmore. After a few miles of driving the skies cleared. We had a nice breakfast overlooking the monument in the Buffalo Dining Room. We took a few pictures and were on the road again headed for the Badlands.

Last night we debated the slight detour to Badlands National Park, and finally decided to make the stop. Wow! We were sure glad that we did! Amazing, crazy stuff! God’s magnificent creations once again leave us speechless!

As our trip comes to a close, I wish I had more words to describe all of the phenomenal sights that we were privileged to view on this trip. The pictures are good, but can’t even come close to defining the 360 degree first-hand views.

Now for the drive home...only 1300 more miles and we'll be back in good-old Atlanta!

Madison River Fishing

West Yellowstone

We arrived to Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone at about 10:30 on Monday and quickly set up camp, did a little shopping, and then we headed for the Madison River to do a little trout fishing. I was skunked, but did have one nice fish break my leader. Andrea decided not to fish and just sat on the bank and read and swatted flies and mosquitoes. I can’t think of too many wives that would volunteer for that!

Today we hit the river with our guide, Rob Orsini from Jacklin’s Fly Shop, to drift the Madison. Within a few minutes of fishing Andrea landed her first trout on a fly rod, a 16” brown trout. She ended up landing another and hooking several. Actually she hooked more than I did! I got a few browns and a nice rainbow, but lost a huge brown and missed probably 20 strikes!!! It was a frustrating day of fishing, but Andrea had fun and said she would like to do it again. Andrea also hooked me in the head on her back cast. She acted like it was an accident, but she was casting too good for that. Tomorrow we're off to Slough Creek in North Yellowstone.

Jenny Lake Hike

We hiked 12 miles which climbed over 2500 feet in the Jenny Lake area. The trail which started at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center took us partially around the lake to an amazing waterfall, Hidden Falls. From there it climbed dramatically to a beautiful overlook, Inspiration Point, which overlooked Jenny Lake and the surrounding area. From there we continued on Cascade Canyon Trail which took us through the mountain meadows of Cottonwood Creek. The trail followed the creek the whole way. We were able to see some beautiful wildflowers while gazing up at the Tetons. On our way back through the meadow we saw a mule deer and a bull moose. It is amazing to see these animals in their natural habitat.

This hike is a must do if you visit Grand Teton National Park. It is my favorite hike of the trip so far! We started at 8:45 and finished around 1:00. We were among the few hikers in the morning, but the trail really filled up on our way back. We were told that this is one of the most popular hikes in the area, so we would recommend starting very early in the day, possibly around 7:00 a.m. to avoid the crowds.

After our hike we were starving so we drove into Jackson to try a Mexican restaurant recommended by our river guide yesterday. We were both so hungry from our 12 mile hike we devoured our lunches! We then walked around the town and did a little shopping. Jackson has so many neat shops including souvenir shops, boutiques, and western stores. We only shopped for a few hours before the tiredness from our hike set in. We headed back to the campground for some rest. I took a two hour nap while Nick fished the Gros Ventre River behind our site. He caught 2 cutthroat and 2 white fish.

We spent the evening cooking brats, making s’mores, and sitting around the fire. This morning we woke up, packed up, and we are on our way to West Yellowstone.

July 12th- 5 Years: In Sickness and In Health

Our 5th anniversary didn’t start off as I had planned. I decided to turn off my mental alarm clock which has been getting us up at 5:30 and let Andrea sleep in. As she started getting ready in the morning she realized that she couldn’t read anything up close (Andrea does have prescription classes for seeing far away). After a couple of hours and still no improvement she called her eye doctor who told her to go to an Emergency Room. For a second opinion she decided to call our friend Leslie Guy (an Optometrist) who happened to be on vacation in Alaska, but AJ managed to call when they were in cell service. Within a few seconds and a couple of questions Leslie figured out the cause of Andrea’s blurred vision…a motion sickness patch. We then sat down to eat at a place called Bubba’s in Jackson. I had to read the menu to Andrea, but within a couple of hours of removing the patch her vision started improving, and within 12 hours was back to normal. Thanks Leslie (Dr. House)!!!!

After breakfast we met at Dave Hansen White Water where we were transported for a 13-mile float down the Snake River. It was absolutely beautiful. We saw 4 bald eagles, an otter, and some of the best fly fishing water in Wyoming, but they wouldn’t let me bring my fly rod on the raft. After the float we returned to Dave Hansen headquarters where we boarded another bus to the White Water section of the Snake. We were placed in an 8 man raft, and when the guide asked who wanted to be the front man I of course volunteered. However, I did almost fall out when we hit the first set of rapids. This was a ton of fun and Andrea has already talked me into booking another trip in the Carolinas.

When we returned from the trip we gathered up our clothes and walked a couple of blocks down the road to shower at the Anvil Hostile. Needless to say, Andrea had seen the movie Hostile and was a little freaked out, but to save a trip back to our campground there weren’t any other options.

Once we were clean we walked to the Blue Lion Restaurant for our anniversary dinner. This was probably the best meal I have ever had in a restaurant, and it may have even surpassed our grilled SPAM and cheese sandwiches we had yesterday. Their specialty is the rack of lamb, which I ordered, while Andrea got a steak. If you are ever in Jackson, you need to try this place. We did a little shopping afterwards and didn’t return to our trailer until late. This morning we are getting ready to do some hiking around Jenny Lake.
